[what's new?]
This is an archive of the short lived [what's new?] section I ran on the home page for a while. It initially started as a place for quick life updates and a little about what I've been reading/watching lately. I liked this format conceptually, but in practice I don't feel like it found its place on the site. I would like to revisit it at some point. Maybe it can live here for now and I'll keep at it? No promises.

- We moved! At long long last. The process was arduous and took way longer than it ever should have done but we're finally moved in and starting to make the place livable. I'll do a bigger write up at some point soon but for now it feels great to call this place home. My partner is finding it harder for sure, she won't really feel love for the place until we decorate, which I can understand. I've even had time to squeeze in some exciting auditions. I have two monthly roundups to get through so expect those soon.

Banjo and Ro's Grand Island Hotel
After watching every series of Interior Design Masters for house ideas we noticed some of the contestants ended up with their own spin-off shows, the most interesting of which seemed to be this one. It follows one of the winners and his partner renovating a ruined manor house on an outer Hebridean island in Scotland, trying to get it ready for the winter. The task is herculean and they don't quite manage to get it up and running by the end of the show, or before they run out of money. If anything it's a bit of cathartic stress relief for us. At least we're not doing that.

The Witcher - Blood of Elves - Andrzej Sapkowski
This was an audiobook I've been keen to get around to, partly because I wanted to listen to the book anyway, but also because I'm always interested to see how narrators tackle audiobooks with so many characters. Steven Fry's narration of the Harry Potter books relies a lot more on tone of voice than it does on accents (though there are a few great ones in there), whereas this was a very accent-heavy read. Peter Kenny has done a terrific job keeping so many characters distinct across such a wordy novel. There's never any doubt as to who's talking, and even one-line incidental characters are given the respect they deserve. -
Cleopatra and Frankenstien by Coco Mellors
We finally finished it last night. What a ride. The ending was gorgeous, though it did leave me wanting an epilogue or something, just to see where the characters ended up. Rather than leaving anyone with a solid conclusion, we leave them somewhere in transition, starting new phases of their lives. I suppose that can only be a good thing; lets them live on in the imagination.

The Pitt
We finished the second season of The Pitt and loved it. It's probably my favourite show of the past ten years. Yes, I had my doubts about the second season from the first couple of episodes, but the rest of the season absolutely saved it. -
Shrinking
I'm really in two minds about Shrinking. On the one hand some of the jokes land perfectly, and the acting is stellar throughout (especially from Harrison Ford); but the dialogue is really starting to bug me. We're about half way through the first season and so far it seems like every conversation the characters have with each other are the same. They're all the same level of friends with eachother, so anyone can have a heart-to-heart with anyone, making it feel like character relationships don't matter, no matter how much the show wants you to believe otherwise. I'm enjoying it, but I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it enough for three seasons of it. -
The Night Manager
We watched Season 2 of Night Manager and both of us really enjoyed it, which was a surprise. It was interesting seeing the ending line up a little more with the original novel tonally, and the tee-up for a third season was a nice surprise. I do think the show suffered a little in the writing department, specifically with the dialogue. LeCarre dialogue has a flavour to it, a gentle, almost delicate formality that barely covers a bloodied-fist brutality. The new show at times felt like a generic spy show. -
Slow Horses
I showed my partner Slow Horses almost as a thank you for indulging me with Night Manager. She enjoys Slow Horses a lot more, which is understandable: Horses is probably a better show disregarding my own preferences. Originally I watched season 1 and 2 in quick succession, but found the character Roddy Ho to be too unbearable to continue (that's not a criticism by the way, I think the character is brilliantly performed and written, he just pushes my own buttons a little too well.). I took a break from it for a while before coming back to season 3 myself, and I'm glad I did. It's fantastic from top to bottom.

There is no Antimemetics Division by QNTM
I've been a fan of the SCP fictional universe for a long time, well over a decade. I remember reading their stories at my first job when I really should have been doing other things. This novelisation of one of the sites most popular stories caught my attention and piqued my curiosity. I'm not completely done with it yet, but so far it's a word for word copy of the original with references to the SCP foundation changed to a "legally distinct" organisation that allows the book to function as a standalone piece. I definitely think the target audience for this book is not established SCP fans, as the changes come across a little clunky. Thankfully the book still captures the thrills of the original, and new readers can still engage with the concepts without feeling like they've crashed a party they weren't invited to.
Can you believe these update sections were meant to be short.

Still no movement on the house purchase. They do say "no news is
good news" and as far as we're aware everything is moving
smoothly, but it's doing nothing to alleviate the anxiety.
With Trumps needless war in Iran throwing the economy into chaos, the mortgage market was one of the first things to be hit. Thankfully this won't directly affect us much, but who knows what kind of damage it's done to folk further on in the chain. We don't, and can't, know.
What's even more worrying is the fuel situation. My family lives quite rurally, and the fuel stations near them have started closing due to lack of supply. Stations further afield are rationing their supply and limiting how much you can buy. I don't know when we will get to see them again, and they don't know if they can come and help with the house, something we were all really looking forward to. Luckily it seems like the prevailing sentiment is that Trump, and MAGA, are on the verge of some kind of collapse. One can only hope.

Interior Design Masters
I think we've finished every season of IDM now. It's been a lovely watch and given us some ideas for the house. One of the winners, Banjo, has a couple of TV shows of his own, maybe they'll be worth a watch. -
The Night Manager
One of my favorite books made into a stellar series. My partner wanted an exciting series where we can't wait to watch the next episode, so I suggested this half as a joke, knowing she doesn't share my affinity for spy stories. I don't think it's her favorite show at all, but she's enjoying it enough to want to finish it. Didn't know they made a season 2 either, so that'll be something for me to watch eventually.

It feels like we're stuck in limbo at the moment. Yesterday an
offer was accepted on our flat, meaning we have 6-7 weeks to
move out whether the house purchase is finalised or not. I have
a feeling we will be moving back in with my parents for a time,
but obviously we would love to avoid that. The lack of
transparency from the estate agents is driving me insane, but I
understand there's probably very little they can actually tell
us.
What's making things even more difficult is, because I lost the touring job, I'm down a significant chunk of money I was banking on to get me through these next few months, and since we're moving out of town, getting a job where we are now is pretty much pointless, and getting a job where we're going is next to impossible. That doesn't mean im not trying obviously, but it's another anxiety that can't be easily alleviated. So much for going full time.

- If Beale Street Could Talk - James Baldwin I started and stopped this a few times because of everything going on recently, but I've been really enjoying my time with it. The characters are just so engaging. I've never read Baldwin before - like most people I've seen the famous debate with William F Buckley, as well as his appearance on the Dick Cavett Show and his conversation with Nikki Giovanni, and whilst these appearances are enthralling, enlightening, and moving, they make me embarrassed to say I've never read his work before. I'm not really where I'd like to be with my lines, but the rehearsals will be an intensive enough process that I think they'll sink in pretty quickly. I had an audition for another job too which, if I got it, would be another month with acting work - potentially a quarter of the year taken up with acting work. I don't want to jinx anything, but things are looking really good.
-
📺
- The Pitt - Season 2 My partner and I have been looking forward to this since we finished the first season, and so far it hasn't disappointed. The characters are still just as engaging and the pace of the show still feels break-neck. It definitely feels more polished, with a proper title card (insane that that's all it takes to feel like the production value has gone up), but honestly that little bit of polish kind of takes away from the raw, rough edge that season one had. A couple of the characters feel a little more caricatured compared to season one, but I want to reserve judgement until we've seen it all.

I kicked things off with the January play, which will probably get it's own write-up soon, and as I write this I am home in Scotland for the first time in almost a year preparing for the touring play. I honestly don't think I've had a period of back-to-back work like this since I started acting professionally.

📺
- Pluribus Without a doubt a brilliant show. The first episode makes for an incredibly effective horror story on its own, and might be one of my favourite single episodes of TV ever. I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
I revisited this book mainly because it's a quick read, but also because it's been almost a decade since I first picked it up and wondered if my feelings towards it had changed. The first time I read it I did something I had never done with a book before, I immediately started at the beginning and read it again. I don't necessarily feel the need to do that again, but that's mainly because my feelings haven't changed: the book kicks ass.

I'm still rehearsing for the history play and have little to no

This month has been a mixed bag. The cat's health has been all
over the place; visits to the vet have been semi-regular, and he
either turns away from food and sleeps all the time, or switches
back to his old self, yelling for attention and wanting cuddles.
He's had blood work done and thankfully everything they've
tested for has come back negative, but the process is
exhausting, for us
and him.
At the same time we've been seeing our friends a lot this month. One of our friends just moved our from under the thumb of a terrible landlord so we went to celebrate with them, we supported another friend with their comedy show which went down a treat, and we've had a great time just hanging out watching movies. Sometimes it's hard to complain, other times it's much easier.
Unfortunately the cat means we can't travel, so my family is having to come all the way down from Scotland to be with us this year. I'm super greatful that they're making it work, but I know how much of a hassle it is for them. First world problems, I know.

- Educating Yorkshire

- Criminal Minds
More chilled out TV to wind down with in the evenings. Nothing where I've sat down and thought "Ooh I must watch this!"
We're watching series 1 of Educating Yorkshire before we go on to the new series. I've never seen it but my partner has and loves it. It's brilliant. It's one of those shows that sparks quite legnthy conversations between us, which we love. That was one of the main reasons we loved Couples Therapy so much. Each episode focusses on one or two kids and the teachers who make the biggest impact in their school life, and there isnt a single one that you done end up cheering for by the end.
The Orville was an experiment in filling the star trek shaped hole in my heart. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would, but then I did only watch the first few episodes. It's clear that the creators love TNG, but they don't quite nail the quality of writing which, when you're doing similar concepts to classic Star Trek epsiodes, sticks out like a sore thumb. My Mum has been saying Strange New Worlds is worth checking out, but I still don't quite trust new Trek after getting burned by Discovery.

The funeral has been and gone. As strange as it is to think of
anything like this in a positive light, the funeral
was lovely. The speeches were heartfelt and

The funeral is coming up soon and life is back to some kind of
stability, though still far from normality.
The cat has funny ingrained himself in our lives and, no matter how much he disrupts our routine, we absolutely love him. It looks like he will be with us for the forseeable future.
My gym routine has been a bit sporadic but I feel more clear in my objectives now. I've never been very interested in getting huge, and I think I've been putting too much effort into a bodybuilding routine at the cost of flexibility and stamina. It's not serving me, so it's getting the bin.

I had a wonderful phonecall with my agents recently to keep them
updated on everything that's going on. Naturally their first
question was if I wanted them to stop submitting me for work,
life has a way of clarifying what you really want, and I am once
again reminded that this is what I really want. I left the
phonecall with a much clearer vision of what I can do to make
progress when I'm not auditioning, which I've sorely needed.
It's so common to feel like there's some kind of meeting you
missed out on, or something obvious you're not doing that means
everyone else is working but you're not. But reality is so much
simpler than that, and often has next to nothing to do with you.

📖
- Titus Andronicus - by William Shakespeare
- True and False - by David Mammet
Decided to revisit True and False since I was getting more optimistic about my acting. Of all the books to read before starting drama school, True and False is probably the worst, but that's when I read it. Whilst it's full of useful information and relatable experiences, it does come across very anti-institutional when it comes to training. The older and more experienced I get, the more intimately I relate to the feelings he describes. The feeling of inadequacy when techniques bolstered by prestigue don't feel like they're connecting with you. The mental prisons we put outselves in when we convince ourselves that if we don't do x amount of physical and vocal exercises we will be completely incapable of any kind of emotional connection. Whilst I agree with some of it, I can't deny my own experiences of improvement, connection, and inspiration that come from the aspects of the work he dismisses. Like everything, creating your own system is all about picking and choosing what works for you, and I am reminded of that every time I read this book. Big recommend, especially for young actors.
Titus Andronicus is a play I haven't read in well over ten years, and havent seen in 15. It's famous for being one of his bloodier plays, and it deserves its reputation. There's a wonderful clip of Brian Cox playing the title role in a masterclass that I come back to every so often as there's so much to learn from it. I remember watching it a lot when I was in my teens auditioning for drama schools and practicing my monologues. I'm really enjoying reading Shakespeare again. I think it's reminding me of the work I love, and what I love about the work. I set myself the goal of learning two new classical and contemporary speeches before the end of the year, like I used to every year for audition season, and I've found it really exciting. Maybe worth a post.

- Cleopatra and Frankenstien - Coco Mellors
Still working through this. It's a wonderul book. It's refreshing to read something which, so far, is pretty low on plot, and lets you just snuggle up with some interesting characters for a while. Life has been crazier than any of us would like recently. As I
alluded at the end of the
September Round-up we
had some bad news in the family, namely the passing of my
father-in-law. I don't particularly want to go into the details
of it here, but I will say how many corners of our lives have
been touched by his death. Due to extenuating circumstances
there are actually very few things we can do for the time being,
leaving us to deal exclusively with the emotions of it all.
We're re-thinking travel plans, our phones are lighting up with
calls from people we've never met, and suddenly we're hunting
through someone's personal belongings looking for a will.
It's like it changed the tone of our day-to-day. Everything seems hollowed out. The air is a bit more fragile.
We've also taken custody of his cat. Under any other circumstances we would both be overjoyed to have him with us, but now, its bitter-sweet to say the least.

Acting work has been understandably affected by everything going
on, so it was a bit of a relief when I came across
this video on Instagram
that outlines a simple checklist/schedule for positive steps you
can take every week as an actor. I remember when I was starting
out and still auditioning for drama schools I had one of these
printed out and taped to my desk, but I ended up falling away
from it as I started working more consistently. I took some time
this week to make myself a new weekly schedule. Maybe I'll make
a more detailed post about it once I've figured out what works.
My casting director database is filling out nicely, and I've been adding in informtion about when I've auditioned for each one. This helps me plot out who I've still to reach out for, and who to re-connect with after some time away.

- America's Sweethearts Believe it or not, Criminal Minds is our go-to chill out viewing with dinner. We're at the end of season 12. I really admire these actors for staying with a show that long. I cant imagine the challenges that come from playing the same character for over a decade.
Keeping on the "chilled out" track, America's Sweethearts is a really eye-opening look into the world of American Cheerleading. The drama school parralells were a bit much for me sometimes. I recognised a lot of the same unhealthy and destructive patterns that obsession brings about in these young women in myself when I was younger, and I definitely had to look away at points.

So I changed the site again. Thankfully I have an archived copy
of the previous version so if I hate it, I can always go back,
but for now I'm really enjoying this minimalist look. Again,
every time I see a new blog I love, I wish mine looked like
that.
This also has the added benefit of being less resource intensive. Not that the original was in any way difficult for browsers, but it wasnt the most load efficient thing in the world, and scored pretty badly on accessability metrics. Hopefully this will do better.

More emails being sent out, no replies yet. In good news, the
auditions are picking up again. Done about four this month
already and got a couple more to do this weekend.

📺
- The Pitt
- Practical Magic My partner and I watched The Pitt over about four days. It's one of the best shows I've ever seen, even if it does feel like you're having a panic attack the entire time. All those Emmy wins were so deserved. We also watched Practical Magic as a little rainy-day movie. Super cute, chilled out autumn vibes from this one. We are both big fans of Charmed and the aesthetic crossover made it feel familiar despite us never having watched it all the way through before.

- The King in Yellow - Robert W. Chambers
- The Russia House - John leCarre Still reading these when I have a spare moment. As you can see I don't have much of those these days.

💤
- Cleopatra and Frankenstien - Coco Mellors I should explain, this 💤 section indicates the book I'm reading to my partner to help her sleep. This is where the bulk of my reading gets done. So far we are absolutely loving this book. It's so much fun spending time with these characters that we are both dreading the terrible things that will inevitably happen to them.

First Update

You can follow me on Bluesky!
You'll be kept up to date on my posts, and (as I'll explain
later) your likes and comments will show up on my site!
Anyway, on to the update.
Spent the past few days completely overhauling the site's design twice. I realise now that the version you're looking at is remarkably similar to a design I binned in favour of a more simplistic black-and-white one, but I think this has turned out nicer, especially the light theme; if I'm honest with myself I've never really been much of a Dark-mode person. I'm going to try and add to it a little over the next few days, but I like where it's at.
Speaking of overhauling, the back-end of this page has had a serious going over, if you know what I mean. Double entendre's aside these past few days has seen me discover Webmentions, get stuck half way through implementation, tear it all out, then come back to it later with a clear head. Starting from now, my main blog posts (round-ups, rambles, etc) will all support Webmentions.
I've also decided that this [now] page would actually make a decent addition to the RSS feed as a sort of catch-up to let you know what I'm doing. Perfect for folk who mainly read blogs through RSS and who might miss what's going on with the actual site. Plus it's a fairly low effort post on my end which goes nicely with the longer posts and audition round-ups. Obviously this feels very similar to JCProbably's amazing Weeknotes series but I'm not holding myself to any kind of schedule. This will be an as-and-when thing to keep my hand in while the bigger projects stew.

The voice-reels are back, the headshots are in, the funding
applications are done, and the emails are heading out the door.
Feeling VERY productive right now.

📺
- Finally showed my partner Landscapers, starring Olivia Coleman and David Thewlis. One of the best mini-series ever made.
- Partner was away on a job for about 6 weeks, so got through a fair amount of Star Trek TNG. Forgot how much I love that show.
