What a month. Every audition an absolute banger of an opportunity and some great progress made through the casting process.
A pencil basically means you're one of the top candidates for the job, so be ready to drop everything if you're chosen. It's a great stage to get to, and I'm finding it happen more and more often these days, which is a very encouraging sign.
Another month that's heavy on the adverts. I've nothing against doing adverts. The money is often quite good, but more than anything they are a chance to work with incredible directors and creative teams that would otherwise be working on TV projects. I'd much rather have directors get to know me on set rather than just through a self tape. Half of getting any job is being easy to get along with.
This month involved a very short notice trip to London for a recall in the Spotlight offices, which was a real treat. I can't believe I've never been there before. Seeing the walls lined with copies of the old Spotlight books (massive catalogues containing the information of pretty much every working actor in the UK) was a rare treat for a history buff like me. I joined Spotlight just before the books were mostly done away with, so there's probably a couple of old books with my first headshots in them.
The recall was lovely. It's such a genuine pleasure to do in person auditions after so long exclusively being auditioned through tapes. The casting director has become a familiar face at this point; it seems like he gets me in for most projects, which is another great sign. My scene partner and I got on very well too; we went and grabbed lunch afterwards and exchanged life stories. I love learning about other people's journeys into the arts; you very rarely the same story twice in my experience.
